March 24: Senior Survival Day @ SRL
CITIZENS AGE 55 AND OLDER can get information on issues important to seniors during the next Senior Survival Day, to be held on Wednesday, March 24th at the South Regional Library. Informative talks are planned throughout the day, beginning with a presentation at 9:30 AM by Lt. Craig Stansbury of the Lafayette Sheriff's Office. Lt. Stansbury will be talking up selfprotection, home security, and neighborhood crime prevention. The Sheriff ’s Office is also providing a “Crash Course” trailer that allows persons to experience impaired driving. The trailer will be located in the library parking lot and will be accessible throughout the day. At 11:00 AM, Danielle Bacque with the Alzheimer’s Association will give a one-hour presentation entitled “The Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease”. Other physical and mental health programs are planned for the afternoon, along with Wii gaming and a light lunch. The TRIAD/S.A.L.T. Council, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, and the Lafayette Public Library sponsor the program. Admission is free but registration is required. To preregister, call 981-1028.

UFO Sightings vs Identifiable Flying Objects
KAREN BRAVATA, LA state Director of MUFON (Mutual UFO Network), will describe the scientific study that MUFON performs on reported UFO sightings. She will talk about case histories, MUFON’s online reporting system, and will teach participants how to discern the difference between an actual UFO and an identifiable flying object... of which there are many.

CAROLYN BROWN, avid gardener and member of the Louisiana Craft Guild, will demonstrate the process and stages involved in the art of flower pressing. She will show participants how to create beautifully framed works of art with pressed flowers.

ANN JUSTICE, gardening columnist, author, and plant expert, will talk on flowering trees and shrubs of the coastal South and will show color photographs which focus on local spring and summer shrubs and trees. Justice’s presentation will help area gardeners plan landscapes that provide year-round color. Admission is free.

National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month, and the Lafayette Public Library is commemorating poetry month with a visit from Louisiana’s Poet Laureate, Dr. Darrell Bourque. Since his appointment as state Poet Laureate, he has traveled extensively, bringing his poetry and the works of other promising writers to citizens across the state. The return of South Louisiana’s native son gives library patrons the opportunity to meet Dr. Bourque and hear his presentation, “Poems: Where They Come From and Where They Go”. Bourque will read from his works and answer questions about the art of value of poetry. Don’t miss this special opportunity to hear one of Louisiana’s finest poets. Learn how to put your best self forward in your next job or promotion interview by attending this informative presentation by LYNLEY JONES, who was an Etiquette Instructor for the Lake Charles Cotillion for more than ten years. In her one-hour skills building presentation, Jones will review basic business and job interview etiquette to help job and promotion seekers land that special position. The following are someof the subjects that Jones will address: the art of conversation; how to answer personal questions well; the use of respectful language; avoiding interview blunders; knowing the “image builders”; and recognizing self-defeating behaviors. SOUTH REGIONAL LIBRARY SLEUTHS MYSTERY BOOK CLUB
On the third Thursday of every month, mystery lovers are invited to gather at the South Regional Library and discuss specific mystery works. For the convenience of those who are available at different times of the day, there will be a morning and an evening book club offered. The morning session will be held at 11:00 AM; the evening session at 6:30 PM. Both clubs will usually meet in the South Regional Library Conference Room, except for dates when guest authors visit. In those instances, theclubwillmeet in the large meeting room.

Genealogy 101
Members of the Lafayette Genealogical Society provide presentations and help to interested persons in researching their family histories. First Saturday of the month, 9:30 a.m - 12:00 noon. Scheduled meetings: April 3, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, Sep. 4, Oct. 2, and Nov. 6 at the South Regional Library. Also, May 1 at the Main Library Meeting Room, 1st Floor.
 
The Society also offers presentations on different aspects of the genealogy research process.
