Summer Reading Kickoff Celebration

Encourage your child to Dig Into Reading this summer with the Lafayette Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. Children (and adults and teens, too*) can win prizes for reading and enjoy a full lineup of free entertaining and educational activities. SUMMER KICKOFF CELEBRATION

Internationally known for her spicy style, Johnette Downing’s movin’ and groovin’ musical performances will start the kickoff with her concert ”Reading Rocks.” There will also be crafts, a fun jump, “Zoo Zoom” petting zoo and more. The Northside High Drill SQUAD will also perform their “Stepping” percussive dance routines! For details, call 981-1028.

This year’s Teen Reading Alliance theme is “Beneath the Surface.” For details, visit LPLteen.net. The Adult Summer Reading theme is “Groundbreaking Reads.” Adults and teens who register and log books online will have opportunities to win prizes in drawings throughout the summer.

History & Conservation of New Orlean's St. Louis Cemeteries

Daniel Hammer from the Williams Research Center in New Orleans will discuss the history and architecture of the Big Easy’s oldest and most iconic cemeteries, which date back as early as 1788. These important monuments to New Orleans’ history and culture are threatened, due to exposure, vandalism and overuse. This talk will touch on the conservation of these cemeteries and the outlook for their future.
