I 'm beginning to doubt my own ability to assess the quality of contemporary novels as this is currently on most best-seller lists and seems to be generating massive approval, but - unfortunately - not for me. Though the plot was interesting, and I was profoundly moved by the plight of the young man around whom the story revolved, I pointedly did NOT like the heroine of the piece, and found the author's recurring propensity for resorting to esoteric phrases and high-flung language to be annoying at best. Who says "penumbric" instead of shadowy - and why? Such instances happened often, and that, along with the tendency to use classical, often obscure art and musical references, made it a tough read, which is a shame since the story itself was stirring and worth telling.
