Review
Almost from the beginning, I was prepared to give this book a negative review, due to the "gimmick"; I couldn't understand why such a respected, gifted author would feel the need to indulge in such an obvious trick. BUT, in the end, I saw the logic. I'm still not sure I wholly approve, but I do understand it. Having the conclusion masquerade as the beginning is a well-played maneuver and definitely keeps the reader guessing until the very end. The only thing that was not totally unexpected was the shadows around 'Daniel'; once or twice, there were hints of what he would turn out to be. Gabrielle, OTOH, was masterfully disguised. All in all, although moderately annoying in some ways, it turned out to be a resounding success.  The october list
