Video Editing Class with LITE
Teens are invited to creat PSA’s for the Library’s Summer Reading Program. Teens attending this class will participate in multiple roles in the video editing process, from developing the story to acting and editing. All participants will be mentored by individuals in the industry and will receive hands-on experience. Videos made during these classes will be used for publicity. Bring your creativity and help “Make Waves @ Your Library.” Registration is required and begins Monday, January 4th. A photo consent is required.

ACT Practice Test
Students are invited to take an ACT practice test, complete with test-like environment. Test results with strategies will be presented by The Princeton Review on the following Thursday. Registration is required and begins Monday, February 1st. Test sessions are available at two library locations. Test results will be given for both sessions at the Main Library ONLY.

Open Acoustic Jam
Teen guitarists of all levels are invited to bring their acoustic guitar to a new monthly jam session. Experienced guitarists will lead the group and help with questions.

Poems: Where They Come From and Where They Go
Poetry lovers, aspiring writers, and interested teens will be introduced to the poetry of Dr. Darrell Bourque, Louisiana’s Poet Laureate. Dr. Bourque will read excerpts from his books and discuss his works. Join us for a unique evening celebrating poetry and writing of our local talent.This event follows the Teen Writing Contest Awards ceremony.

Cooking Made Easy
Teens will create and enjoy delicious no-bake appetizers with a variety of fillings. Call the location nearest you to register for this fun program. Registration begins March 1st for the North Regional program and April 1st for all other locations.

- North Regional Library Teen Book Club -
Teens ages 13-18 are invited to join an exciting new teen book club at the North Regional Library in Carencro! Author visits, poetry slams, book blogs, and tips on writing are in store for teens who love to read. Meets on second Tuesday of each month. For details, call the North Regional Library at 896-6323.
Writing Tips - Tuesday, March 9 6:00 PM
In preparation for the LPL Teen Writing Contest, the NRL Teen Book Club will have a special guest who will offer writing tips. Books that break boundaries will also be discussed.
Poetry Slam - Tuesday, April 13 6:00 PM
In celebration of National Poetry Month, the NRL Teen Book Club will host a poetry slam featuring great poetry and special guests. Refreshments will be served.

Deadline: Wednesday, March 31 2010
Submission Guidelines
The contest is open to students in grades 1-12 who reside in Lafayette Parish or in the surrounding parishes: St. Landry, Acadia, St. Martin, Vermilion, and Iberia.

Students may submit work in only one of the following categories: Poetry, Fiction, Nonfiction, or Drama/Screenplay.
1. Writers may submit one poem no longer than two pages total.
2. Fiction may be no longer than five pages.
3. Nonfiction may be no longer than five pages.
4. Drama (teens only) may be no more than ten pages.
Submissions should be double-spaced, 12-point font, with numbered pages.

Entry form and submission need to be turned in by Wednesday, March 31, 2010, to any of the ten Lafayette Public Library locations.

Please staple the form to the submission and do not write your name on your work. Works will be judged by Acadiana Writing Project Teacher-Consultants and graduate students in the Creative Writing program at UL Lafayette.
Winning Entries
First, Second, and Third place winners for the grades 9-12 category will be honored at a Teen Writers Ceremony/Reception with prizes to be held on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 6:30 PM at the South Regional Library, 6101 Johnston Street. First Place winners will have their works published in UL Lafayette’s literary journal The Southwestern Review. Following the awards ceremony, Louisiana’s poet laureate, Darrell Bourque, will present a special reading.

First, Second, and Third place winners for the grades 1-5 and 6-8 categories will be honored at a Young Writers Ceremony/Reception on Saturday, May 1 at 10:00 AM at the South Regional Library.

Winners will be notified by phone in advance of the ceremony; names will be posted on the teen website, www.lplteen.net on Friday, April 16th.
